Yes, you're definitely right.  I just tried this build with:

1) No autoconf/automake
2) No automake
3) All

It only failed on 3).  So, Brandon, try deinstalling automake. Upon further
inspection copying /usr/X11R6/share/aclocal/gtk.m4 to /usr/local/share/aclocal
caused the build to progress further, but dies on something different. Whee!
autoconf/automake really confuses me sometimes.
