I'm soliciting a specific example, because in my experience they
usually simultaneously indicate the selection by inverse video or
some sort of visible cursor.

OK, you're actually starting to be useful instead of just telling
me to shut up.  There's an increasing number of questions about this
since ls -G, and I'm trying to figure out how to make life easier
for new users and the people who have to deal with them.

So, is the answer to use ~/.ssh/environment to set TERMCAP to
the xterm-color entry?  Should we put something in the Handbook
describing this process?
