You can use 4.0 on a machine with a i810 motherboard.  In fact, I built
RC2 on a machine with an i810 motherboard.  However, it depends on your
definition of "use".  I don't think that we support the sound card on the
i810 for example, and, personally, I haven't tried X out on this machine
yet.  So, it depends on your definition of "use".
