You need to have the full set of sources installed, because 'make
buildkernel' is only needed if you're upgrading the system.  If you
only update your kernel sources and leave userland untouched, your
system isn't guaranteed to work.  If you don't update your kernel
sources and just want to recompile your kernel to reconfigure it, the
old 'config; make' method is still acceptable (and in your case, the
only option).
