I don't have an answer for you, but I'd like to comiserate.  There are
people that claim to have this working, but I bet they're running XFree86
3.3.6.  I've tested with 4.0.3 and 4.1.0, and have had no luck.  I also
hacked 2.2.4.1 so it would compile, and ran into the same problem.  By
chance, are you also running X 4.x?
