yikes.  You're right.  umm, what should the rest be? :)  I suppose I 
managed to delete it somehow . . . and I seem to have deleted my /
etc.old backup directory a few days ago . . .

nope.

fac13:/root#lpc status all
lp:
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        1 entry in spool area
        waiting for lp to become ready (offline?)

But it's pretty clear now that I have a garbled line in printcap :(
