I upgraded from 4.3-RELEASE to RELENG_4_5 and had no real problems.
This was more than a month ago, though

The method currently recommended in the online handbook is to do this
in smaller steps:

make buildworld
make buildkernel
make installkernel
(reboot to single user mode)
make installworld
mergemaster

The handbook on www.freebsd.org has a good chapter about upgrading
your system. If you read it, you might get a better idea what
specifically is going wrong for you.
