Subject:   Mysql won't let me in

I installed mysql, started it with safe_mysqld, and changed the root password w/ mysql admin.  mysqladmin -u root password ********  now when i try to create a databas w/ mysql admin it won't accept a pass.

mysqladmin create mini 
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: ' root@localhost' (Using password:NO)'

mysqladmin create mini -u root --password=[********]
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: ' root@localhost' (Using password:NO)'

mysqladmin create mini -u root
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: ' root@localhost' (Using password:NO)'
