perms on var:

marvin# ls -la / | grep var
drwxr-xr-x 20 root wheel 512 Jul 16 20:51 var

Getting the same error even if a do a chmod 777 on /var, guess something
is fucked up totaly.

the server is started from the default script in /usr/local/etc/rc.d/
which starts the db with --user=mysql
