I can confirm now that my switching to virtual channels 2 days ago
caused the slowdown.

Without virtual settings I have to disable sound in KDE, otherwise
artsd seem to occupie the sounddevice entirely.

Although I think that it already worked concurrently at the moment
xmms only runs, if sound is disabled in kde.

My mainboard is a 
MSI K8N Neo2 with nForce 3 Ultra chipset.
CPU AMD64 3000+, 1 Gig DRAM.

And now more data: dmesg, pciconf -lv and kernel profile.
