I think it isn't completely broken. In its Makefile you can 
comment the line
# WITH_CMUCL=	yes
and uncomment
WITH_GCL=	yes

This will build maxima with gnu common lisp instead of cmucl and 
should work.

There also are the CAS's
mupad 	(needs linux compat)
yacas	(no GUI, console only)
gap	(specialized on algebra and group theory stuff)
