This may prove to be an ACPI issue, but I didn't want to start the
thread with a cross-post: it might set a bad example. :-}

So at work, I was assigned a shiny new Dell Optiplex 755; when I
arrived, it had some flavor of Linux installed on it; I overlaid that
with my usual FreeBSD workstation/laptop install, where I have 4
bootable slices:

* Slice 1 -- RELENG_6
* Slice 2 -- used for experimenting
* Slice 3 -- RELENG_7
* Slice 4 -- HEAD

During the course of setting this up, I had occasion to reboot the
machine a few times. And I noticed a peculiar pattern: once it had been
up & running, the next boot would hang just after

=2E..
ehci1: [GIANT-LOCKED]
usb6: EHCI version 1.0
usb6: companion controllers, 2 ports each: usb3 usb4 usb5
usb6: <EHCI (generic) USB 2.0 controller> on ehci1
usb6: USB revision 2.0
uhub6: Intel EHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 2.00/1.00, addr 1
uhub6: 6 ports with 6 removable, self powered
pcib2: <ACPI PCI-PCI bridge> at device 30.0 on pci0

 =3D=3D=3D> hang <=3D=3D=3D

The only thing I've found that gets it out of that hang is a forced
power-cycle. Once that's done, the next boot proceeds normally, as if
there were nothing wrong; such a successful (RELENG_6) boot then
continues with:

pci2: <ACPI PCI bus> on pcib2
isab0: <PCI-ISA bridge> at device 31.0 on pci0
isa0: <ISA bus> on isab0
=2E...

If I try power-cycling during an ill-fated boot sequence, but before it
gets to the "hang" point, it will hang on the next boot anyway -- it's
as if the silly machine has a desperate need to hang on a boot before it
will behave ... "rationally" (to the extent the concept makes sense --
and at significant risk of over-anthropomorphizing).

pciconf(8) identifies the last device probed before the hang as:

pcib2@pci0:30:0:        class=3D0x060401 card=3D0x02111028 chip=3D0x244e808=
6 rev=3D0x92 hdr=3D0x01
    vendor     =3D 'Intel Corporation'
    device     =3D '82801 Family (ICH2/3/4/4/5/5/6/7/8/9,63xxESB) Hub Inter=
face to PCI Bridge'
    class      =3D bridge
    subclass   =3D PCI-PCI

I've attached a complete dmesg.boot from a successful RELENG_6 boot,
as well as the output form pciconf -lv.

The "hang pattern" appears to be invariant regardless whether I
boot RELENG_6, RELENG_7, or HEAD.

Please include me on responses, as I am not currently subscribed
to hardware@. (For mail clients that honor it, I've set Reply-To.)

Peace,
david

I submit that "conspiracy" would be an appropriate collective noun for cats.
