I have installed acroread8 with no errors, however on
execution I get the following error;

/usr/local/Adobe/Reader8/ENU/Adobe/Reader8/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread: error while loading shared libraries: libgobject-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

the file is there;

$ cd /usr/local/lib
$
$ ls -tld libgobject*
-rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  344082 Feb 27 19:17 libgobject-2.0.a
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel     984 Feb 27 19:17 libgobject-2.0.la
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel      19 Feb 27 19:17 libgobject-2.0.so -> libgobject-2.0.so.0
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  235062 Feb 27 19:17 libgobject-2.0.so.0

and ldconfig sees it;

$ ldconfig -r | grep libgobject
        219:-lgobject-2.0.0 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0
        460:-lgobject-2.0.0 => /usr/local/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0
$

I have followed a few threads with similar error but have found no resolution yet.

Any pointers would be helpful.
