Correct.  The tag= line for ports should always be . (period, indicating
HEAD), while for src it should be whatever tag/release you want to run
(RELENG_8_0 for 8.0-RELEASE, RELENG_8 for -STABLE (soon to be 8.1), or .
for -CURRENT/HEAD).

If you messed with any of the tag= lines in your supfiles, you should
examine the contents of /var/db/sup and ensure what's in there matches
what you're actually using.

I can't help with your X/mouse issues.
