You can already find this concept in use: The Midnight Commander, allthough a text-based program (but NOT a CLI program!) integrates command line and "abstracted" operations. It has excellent keyboard AND mouse support. Another program that comes to my mind is mencoder + gmencoder. The gmencoder offers a GUI wrapper for the mencoder program.
