What does:

$ ls -l /dev | grep cd

give you?

I assume you're a member of wheel.

Give cdcontrol(1) a go if the above looks ok.

Make sure your volume isn't turned right down! (mixer(1))

Have you checked out that your sound card is configured ok?

$ cat /dev/sndstat
