I guess I'm confused then.  It definitely fails on:

    FreeBSD 11.0-BETA4 Fri Aug 5 2016 root@releng2.nyi.freebsd.org

(I never updated it to 11.0R because I didn't think anything significant
changed between them.)

I'll try spinning up another machine when I finish my current road trip.
