Try putting `AHC_FORCE_PIO' in your config file and see. From GENERIC:

options		"AHC_FORCE_PIO"		# Some motherboards choke on MemI/O,
					# so use PIO in the ahc driver in the
					# generic kernel.

Personally, on a Tyan Titan Pro M/B, I've got no problems without this
option in place.
