I finally concluded that they're simply forms of the same thing, and what you're seeing here is simply a difference in cultural approach: On one hand we have Satoshi, the more subtle and refined japanese man with his S&M more in keeping with the style of those "rock bands" who play in Tokyo's parks, assaulting passers-by and themselves with bad, loud, electric renditions of american rock music and thus doing some form of pennance for the sins of their ancestors. Bill, on the other hand, represents the crude, water buffalo american, tromping all over everything with his big feet and brash, Hollywood, "if you gotta do it then overdo it" kinda ways.
