Ok, have you read the /etc/ppp/ppp.conf.sample file?  Everything you need to
know is in there.  I'd be happy to help you with the finer points of setting
up the ppp.conf but I won't write it for you.

This means it detected your modem on what's called COM1 in DOS.

No, you're modem was detected on COM1, which in FreeBSD is called
/dev/cuaa0.
