I would extend this to say, "Never install a FreeBSD -RELEASE." I don't
remember the last time a -Release didn't create a bunch of errors due to
last minute cramming in of things. Watch the -Stable mailing list (for
2.2.x) and wait for things to calm down a bit after the -Release and
then install the latest -Stable.

2.2.2 is easily the worst release of FreeBSD on the 2.2 branch. There
are lots of reasons to upgrade, not the least of which is that if you're
not up to date you won't be able to use the latest ports. There have
been a few very serious changes in the ports tree in the last month or
so that require an up to date system. There are also a lot of security
and performance improvements in more recent versions. The 2.2 tree is
extremely stable right now. That will be less true when people start
getting ready for the 2.2.8-Release.

If this list is for new users to discuss their experiences, that's what
it has to be for.
