Subject: Installing FreeBSD from a DOS partition or even from floppies

Hello,
I have tried the FAQ and the tutorial and the 'for newbies' section
and cannot find help with my problem. I can't install from either
floppies or c:\freebsd on my dos partition (/dev/wd0).
I built up the C:\freebsd directory on my hard drive by ferrying
floppies back and forth from work. I did not want to try installing
from floppies because, as it was, six of them had errors. I put
everything in the c:\freebsd\bin and \manpages and when I try to
install, I get an error message: "the following packages could not be
installed, probably because of an error with the installation media" or
words to that effect. When I look at the debug window it says "cp: not
found". I don't know how to hack in there and find where cp is located,
or perhaps it isn't there at all.
I downloaded the boot image from "here's how to install" link off the
main page.
I next tried to install from floppies, but I get the same error.
While I understand that the installation instructions for installing
from a DOS partition assume you've xcopied the directories over from the
CD (!), and this assumption could cause problems because I have NO WAY
of knowing what the layout is on the CD, the instructions for the
floppies are pretty clear. However, I'm not getting past the first
disk.
If somebody could help me with this, I'd really appreciate it.
FreeBSD CD's are not available around here and I'd rather run FreeBSD
than Linux, which is easily available. I don't have a great net
connection--installing an OS over dialup is a feat bound to die in the
last 2 megs anyway.

Thanks,
Drew.
