This implies BSDI has a SYSV style boot system. If so, I second the notion that this would be an improvement. Tradition, in this case, is a lose. Cruddy or not, the current install/config software persists because nothing better has ever emerged. Not in half a decade (sysinstall.h 1.1 Apr 27, 1995.)
