Actually, I went as far as completely removing /usr/src and /usr/obj,
and then reinstalling the src distribution from a 4.0 release CD, and
then did a make world in /usr/src (which, before I ever cvsup-ed to
stable, worked fine), and I got the same error with compiling gcc.
Pretty weird. I then went and did a `make depend all install' in all
of the directories except contrib, and then once again started a 
`make world', and again - same problem. I can't seem to get around it
now.

Anyway, I'm going to try cvsup again, and start the whole process once
more. There's probably something in the order in which I'm doing things
that's screwing things up, and preventing me from bootstrapping a
complete system.
