Actually, I went as far as completely removing /usr/src and /usr/obj, and then reinstalling the src distribution from a 4.0 release CD, and then did a make world in /usr/src (which, before I ever cvsup-ed to stable, worked fine), and I got the same error with compiling gcc. Pretty weird. I then went and did a `make depend all install' in all of the directories except contrib, and then once again started a `make world', and again - same problem. I can't seem to get around it now. Anyway, I'm going to try cvsup again, and start the whole process once more.
