You can combine my first and second patches to use subshell only for
PORTDIRNAME, while PKGCATEGORY could be extracted using .for loop (see my
second patch).

I just committed pkg_* changes (thanks to Jordan for fast approval). Please
considering committing bsd.port.mk part ASAP, so forthcoming 4.2 would be
shipped with this feature.
