Yes, this could be a way to go. Actually I'm already thinking about something like that,
but have not came to the final conclusion yet.

Yes, this is not a good idea, because libGL from XFree86 is different from those from
Mesa3 (dri, glx etc), so it would be a Great Pain in Ass[tm] to do and maintain
properly.
