I've found the problem. :-))))
sawfish is saving the user-config but stopping to configure
at startup after an error:
"error in local config: (void-value xterm-program)"

i've commented out these lines in
lisp/sawfish/wm/gnome/integration.jl:

   ;; invoke the GNOME terminal instead of xterm
-->  ;; (unless (variable-customized-p 'xterm-program) <--
-->  ;; (setq xterm-program "gnome-terminal")) <--
