Subject: Why does SSH prompt for 2 passwords?

Hello;

I have finally gotten irritated with an occurance that is really not a
problem.

Every time I SSH to a FreeBSD machine from a unix prompt, I get prompted
for a password twice. The first time, that password NEVER works.
Sometimes it is automatically entered as nothing, and a Response line is
printed.  For example :

Password:
Response:
joe@192.168.1.1's password:

Now, I can successfully log in, but it's starting to get annoying, and I
was wondering if there was a setting I could alter that would remove
that extra password/response combination.

Hopefully someone out there in the real world has some advice for me.

Joe
