It all depends on the controller chip.  The ATA driver was recently
updated to recognise the SATA controller in the new Intel ICH5 chips.
Some controller chips will work with the existing ATA driver with few
if any changes, other SATA chips will require a whole new driver.  Do
you have a particular controller chip in mind?
