Hello friends,

I have a problem getting CDROM to boot properly. I own/purchased
both the Walnut-Creek provided 3.2-release and the 4.0-release
versions as distributed by them. I have installed each of them twice (home +
work)
in previous hdwe setups, without difficulty. The last time here on a Asus
TX97LE
with an Intel Pentium-233. I am now trying to upgrade my system to a
DFI K6BV3 board with a K6-2/500 AMD chip. I moved the existing hard disk
to the new system and it would not recognize it properly (thought it was LRG
mode) and wouldn't boot it. I ran QuickTech-Pro under DOS6.22 and it
reported
a bad IDE controller.

I had the vendor replace the system board with a new one. I have swapped the
drive cables with known good ones. I am getting the same boot error.

The CDROM is an ATAPI 45x, a Windows-98 startup disk talks to it properly
when booting with one. The BIOS (Award 1998) sees the CDROM as UDMA, 33.
CDROM was mfgd in 1999 and I have used it before in this system.

I set the BIOS to boot CDROM before all else. It is configured as secondary,
slave,
on IDE1 and the hard disk is primary on IDE0 with its own cable. (I've tried
a couple
of hard disks).

At boot I get the following:

-------begin screen info---------------------

verifying DMI pool data....

Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM: < i hit enter >
  1. FD 2.88 MB System Type -(00)
/boot.config: -P
Keyboard: no

>>FreeBSD/i386 BOOT

Default: 0:fd(0,a)/boot/loader
boot: < i hit enter again >

BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.01

--------------------------end of screen info------------

Notes:

1. System is hung after BTX line and needs a hard power reset
2. My floppy is a 1.44 MB and works properly and is set properly in BIOS.
Not a 2.88.
3. Keyboard is present
4. I get the same information with a 3.2-Release CD and with a 4.0-Release
CD

This sure looks like an issue with the system board. But 2 new ones in a
row?? And
I've had good luck with DFI's before, have several of them.

I'd sure like to get a handle on what to do.
Thanks for any leads, Bob Foxworth < bfoxworth@fortresstech.com >
