Oh, I would have included which shell you were using (that was what I was trying to imply with my "/bin/sh" comment, some people have reported that various exotic shells confuse make). But apparently Pav has already committed a fix for this that involved simplifying the parsing of the OSVERSION conditional because something in 4.8 did not like it. So basically it sounds like the problem has been solved already.
