I would _guess_ its a driver issue with the vr series under 4.x.  I have 
not used that card series at all, so I dont know.  Generally I use only the 
fxp (Intel) and the realtek for low end stuff.  For $18, I would make the 
headache go away and just get a realtek NIC if they work for you.
