It still might be: if you have options in your kernel build that change 
the ABI (like DEBUG_VFS_LOCKS or DEBUG_LOCKS (I can never remember which 
one it is that breaks ABI)) then your modules need to be compiled with 
the same options.  make buildkernel builds modules with the same options 
as your kernel, but other methods do not.
