I do not have a desire to use out-of-date versions with errors in the
systems.

FreeBSD 8-STABLE openssl and openssh version - OpenSSH_5.4p1
FreeBSD-20100308, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009

And openssh has an extremely bad error:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=145940

My system:

# pkg_info -E openss\*
openssh-portable-overwrite-base-5.5.p1
openssl-1.0.0

# ssh -v
OpenSSH_5.5p1 FreeBSD-openssh-portable-overwrite-base-5.5.p1, OpenSSL
1.0.0 29 Mar 2010
usage: ssh [-1246AaCfgKkMNnqsTtVvXxYy] [-b bind_address] [-c cipher_spec]
            [-D [bind_address:]port] [-e escape_char] [-F configfile]
            [-I pkcs11] [-i identity_file]
            [-L [bind_address:]port:host:hostport]
            [-l login_name] [-m mac_spec] [-O ctl_cmd] [-o option] [-p port]
            [-R [bind_address:]port:host:hostport] [-S ctl_path]
            [-W host:port] [-w local_tun[:remote_tun]]
            [user@]hostname [command]

# openssl
OpenSSL> version
OpenSSL 1.0.0 29 Mar 2010
OpenSSL>

Use of WITHOUT_OPENSSL and WITHOUT_OPENSSH for me very actually.

It is possible very long to argue. I think that it is needed to renew
the versions of openssl and openssh in STABLE and CURRENT and remove
failures to complete.
