Do you have the literal "<" in the conf file? ("... = </etc/...") If so, 
you shouldn't.

Also, check your /usr/local/etc/rc.d/dovecot file and see where it's 
supposed to be pulling overrides from. Mine is pulling from 
/usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf instead of the one you have.
