You might be able to avoid the issue you're having, by using: DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=php=5.5 in your make.conf(5) (/etc/make.conf) file. Check to see if you already have a DEFAULT_VERSIONS line there. If not simply add DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=php=5.5 you your make.conf file. If the line already exists, it is a space separated list. So simply append it to the list thusly DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=mysql=5.5 php=5.5 assuming that the entry mysql=5.5 was already listed.
