Welcome to the FreeBSD camp, Mark.

| I just installed GallantWEB. It is a pre-configured version of FreeBSD 3.3
| that acts as a gateway/firewall/server. It is up and running but doesn't
| recognize my D-Link DFE-530TX+ ethernet cards.

Woo. You may be asking a bit much; FreeBSD 3.3 was released in September of
1999. Hard to get good support when we're up to FreeBSD 4.5+. I don't even
see 3.3 in the ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ directory
anymore.

I do see from the 3.3 release notes, though, that the D-Link DFE530TX was
supported under the VIA Technologies Rhine I/II driver. But that still doesn't
help work out your issue. It may well be the "vr" driver you mention, in which
case, you'll probably have to modify your kernel configuration file to include
it (see /sys/i386/conf/ on your system, and Chapter 9 of the Handbook

   http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/kernelconfig.html

even though you're running stuff that's rather out of date.

However, I would gently recommend that you toss aside your intimidation, and
install FreeBSD 4.5-RELEASE. I can guarantee that it will come with all the
tools you need, and it's not overly difficult to configure into a gateway or
firewall or any sort of server you desire. Plus it'll be easier for us to
support. We'll even walk you though configuring the kernel (though the
handbook chapter mentioned above has complete instructions).

As far as installation of 4.5-RELEASE, you can look at Chapter 2:

   http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install.html

which should explain the process. And of course, we're always here to help.

| First: Can anyone give me a map of what should be found in the average, well
| behaved and user friendly system? (I don't know a /usr from a /var.)

Well, hm. Rather than rehashing all the stuff in the Handbook, take a look
through that first.

| Second: Can anyone clue me into tool usage sufficient to build a kernel?

An editor, make, and the standard compilers that come with FreeBSD. You'll
also need to know something about the hardware you have installed. Take a look
through /sys/i386/conf/LINT for a full explanation of all the kernel options.

Best of luck, Mark. And again, welcome.
