I think that everyone has too much confidence in this error message not being a bug in the boot code!  When I reported this a long time ago, everyone told me that my root partition must span cyl 1024, when it doesn't.  Chris even included his disklabel in his original message; his disk has 1002 cylinders, and his root partition is on 654-685...
