If you don't want all ftp users to compress, add your ftp groups as well.
Mine wasn't working locally, but _was_ remotely.

I then added the group to the above line (ie all group2 local remote) and it
worked fine after that!

Thanks, I've been looking for a way to sort this out once and for all for a long time!
