You could have done the following to speed up the downloading part:

1) Install the source from your 4.0-RELEASE CDROM
2) run cvsup with a CVSup file with the 4.0 release tag,
3) change the tag to 4.2 release and re-cvsup.

This is mentioned in the CVSup FAQ at www.polstra.com.
