I'm kinda new myself, but I'll see what I can do here. If anyone out there
thinks I'm leading you down the wrong track, maybe they could help.

Here's one that got me. Did you install Kerberos? If so try su -K

This is more a matter of configuring ppp than the modem itself. Read the
handbook http://freebsd.org/handbook/handbook213.html#510. Also the Pedantic
PPP Primer at http://freebsd.org/tutorials/ppp/ppp.html.

Again, in your .xinitrc file, I would assume.
