How about building your system without HAL?  I have been quite happy 
without it.  As long as I have the following in my Xorg.conf, everything 
(that I need) seems to be detected nicely:

Section "ServerLayout"
     ...
     Option "AllowEmptyInput" "off"
     ...
EndSection
