What does your line in inetd.conf look like now?
Sounds like you didn't move over the new 3.1 lines in /etc/inetd.conf 
from /usr/src/etc/rc.conf.

Ident should now be run with a line that looks something like this:

ident  stream  tcp     wait    kmem:kmem       /usr/local/sbin/identd 
identd -w -t120
