In reading the comp.lang.fortran newsgroup, I came across
a reference to a fast math library for the alpha.  It 
implements many, but not all, math functions in libm.  
The library is LGPL'd.  I currently do not have FreeBSD
running on an alpha machine, but I thought I would bring
