As you said you are using a 386, I suspect you have probably run out
of memory.  Try adding some more (if you can) or creating a larger
swap partition.  It may also be worth upgrading from 2.0 - the latest
version is 2.1.5, which contains a lot of bug fixes.

No.  I would be very surprised if anything your ISP did would cause
your machine to panic :-)
