I'm interested in giving it a shot, but what about the GIF patent
issue -- paying royalties to Unisys if one uses unlicensed software
like the Gimp, and so on?  

I'm not really an artist, but I have done at least one piece
of BSD art: http://sketch.sourceforge.net/gallery.html
