OK, first of all, I just installed LPRng and had it replace my base lpr
system. However, the same error message is repeated.

type -a lpr
lpr is /usr/local/bin/lpr
lpr is /usr/bin/lpr

type lpr
lpr is hashed (/usr/local/bin/lpr)

OK, so now what do I do?
