quick question (referencing from an email I already deleted)

Do you have a user and group tty?  I had this problem once and I hadn't
merged /etc/passwd with /usr/src/etc/passwd (this machine had been
upgraded from 2.1.7 to 3.2 over the years) and I didn't have a user tty so
talk was failing.
