This is an important point.  Part of what made SMPng work was that in cases
where there was a dispute Jason was avaiable to make a final decision if the
group as a whole couldn't come to a consensus.  Granted, we didn't have to do
this very often, but I think knowing that that option was there also forced us
to be a little more willing to compromise, as well.

Yes.  Whether core or jkh or anyone else likes it or not, most committers and
other people who follow the Project perceive that core has authority, and thus
they are in the position to grant that authority to flag wavers should the need
arise.
