Its been a while since I've looked at these, but from what
I remember, I think the Xem series is a MIPS (R3000?) based
critter, whereas the Xe series is Intel 80186 based.  It'd
at least be different bios/cook stuff.  I think Digi even distributes
different drivers for the two under their supported platforms. :(
